What is the Blues Challenge?
Held annually since the mid-2000’s by Ozark Blues Society, this regional challenge is the first step for blues bands and solo or duo acts within a 250 mile radius of Bentonville, Arkansas to enter the International Blues Challenge (IBC.) Seen as a preliminary round, these regional Blues Challenge events are held by blues societies who hold an affiliate membership in the Blues Foundation in Memphis. Those competing in this regional challenge will find themselves experiencing the same format as used in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge. Competitors are not allowed to bring their own equipment (with a few exceptions) and walk onto the stage with instruments in hand in close to a plug and play situation. Set times are 20 minutes and time between acts is strictly limited to 10 minutes. A panel of judges review the band based on the same list of criteria used in Memphis for IBC. Acts are judged on the blues content of their music, their originality, and their stage presence as well as their talent. Winners from this year’s Ozark Blues Society’s Blues Challenge advance to the quarter-finals of the 2018 IBC in January. The annual IBC which has had various forms over the years, has always been the premier contest for up and coming blues artists to gain international notoriety.
